Everyone else painted the butterfly. She painted the egg, the caterpillar, the pupa — and the leaf it had been eating all along.
In the summer of 1699 a fifty-two-year-old woman from Frankfurt sold 255 of her own paintings, wrote her will, and boarded a ship for Suriname with her twenty-one-year-old daughter. No crown funded her, no company employed her, no academy had ever admitted her. She had simply decided that the only way to learn how the insects of South America lived was to go and watch them do it. It remains one of the first scientific expeditions in history financed and led by a woman — and very likely the first mounted purely to study insects.
Educated Europe still half-believed that insects boiled up spontaneously out of mud and rotting meat — vermin, beneath a naturalist's attention. Merian had been raising caterpillars since she was thirteen, and she knew better. Her answer was not an argument but a picture: the egg, the larva, the pupa, the adult, and the particular plant the creature could not live without, all on one sheet. She was drawing ecology a century and a half before anyone had a word for it.

Neues Blumenbuch. Three parts of flower engravings, issued for embroiderers and painters. Her first published work, at twenty-eight — the trade of a woman selling to other women.

Der Raupen wunderbare Verwandelung. Two caterpillar volumes, 50 plates each, documenting 186 European insect species through their whole life cycle — and always on the plant that fed them. Printed in German, not scholarly Latin.

Waltha Castle, Wieuwerd. She leaves her husband for a Labadist religious commune in Friesland. Its patron, Cornelis van Aerssen van Sommelsdijck, was governor of Suriname; his natural-history collection held Surinamese butterflies. The voyage begins as an idea there.
1699–1701
Two years in Suriname. She works up the Suriname River, based at Providentia — the plantation the Labadists founded and abandoned — rearing and drawing insects from life. She planned to stay five years; malaria sent her home in June 1701.

Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium. Sixty plates, published at her own expense in Dutch and in Latin, with twelve subscribers paying in advance for hand-coloured copies. The Rijksmuseum calls it perhaps the most beautiful nature book ever produced.

The peacock-flower plate. Beside the botany she set down what Indigenous and enslaved women had told her: that they used the plant's seeds to end pregnancies rather than bear children into slavery. No European naturalist had thought that worth recording.

The land that made the book
Suriname
The Dutch had held it since 1667, when the Treaty of Breda let the Republic keep this sugar colony and left England with New Netherland — Suriname for Manhattan. It was a place organised entirely around cane, and it had no use for a woman chasing moths up the river. So she worked instead with the people who actually knew the forest: the Indigenous Surinamese and the enslaved Africans on the plantations, whose knowledge her text credits again and again, though almost never by name.
