She built the first aquarium to win an argument two thousand years old — then the sea took her papers back.
For as long as anyone had written about the sea, the argonaut had been an argument. Aristotle described it: a small octopus riding inside a shell so thin it was called paper, so white it looked blown from glass. But whose shell was it? Some naturalists said the animal secreted it, as a snail does. Others insisted it was a squatter — a thief in a house built by something else. You could not settle it with dead specimens in a jar. You had to watch a living argonaut, for months, and nobody had a way to do that.
So a shoemaker's daughter from a village in the Corrèze built one. Jeanne Villepreux had walked some four hundred kilometres to Paris at eighteen, made her name sewing a princess's wedding gown, married an English merchant and moved to Sicily — where, with no scientific training whatsoever, she put the sea inside a box of glass and looked at it properly for the first time.

What she built and what she proved
The work
1832
The aquarium. Three designs: a glass tank for the study; a glass vessel inside a wooden cage that could be sunk and raised in the shallows; and a large anchored cage for holding bigger molluscs on the seabed. The point was never decoration — it was watching an animal stay alive long enough to answer a question.

First woman of the Gioenia. The Accademia Gioenia di Catania elected her its first female member; in time she was a corresponding member of the Zoological Society of London and sixteen other learned societies.
1834
Credited in print. Professor Carmelo Maravigna wrote in the Gioenia's journal that the invention of the aquarium — and its systematic use for the study of marine life — belonged to her.
1830s
The argonaut settled. She reared Argonauta argo from the egg and saw the shell appear within days of hatching; she damaged shells and watched the animal repair them with secretions from its two webbed arms. The shell was the animal's own. In the egg masses she also found a small arm-like creature others took for a parasitic worm — part, as she suspected, of the male argonaut.

Observations et expériences physiques sur plusieurs animaux marins et terrestres. Her findings in print; the same year Richard Owen — the most powerful naturalist in Britain before Darwin — put her argonaut work before the Zoological Society on her behalf. Her Guida per la Sicilia, a naturalist's guide to the island, followed in 1842.

The place that made her
The Strait of Messina
Of all the coastlines in Europe on which to become a marine biologist by accident, she married into the best one. The Strait of Messina is a narrow funnel where two seas meet at different heights and the tide pours over a shallow sill, reversing itself through the day. The turbulence drags water — and animals — up from the deep. Storms leave creatures on the beach that elsewhere you would need a dredge and a ship to reach. Homer put Scylla and Charybdis in this channel; naturalists have been collecting its stranded deep-sea fauna since the eighteenth century. For twenty-five years it delivered specimens to her door.
