Nicolas Steno

1638  —  1686

He worked out how to read time in stone — then shut his books, gave away his bishop's ring, and never wrote science again.

In October 1666, fishermen off Livorno hauled in an enormous shark, and the Grand Duke of Tuscany had its head sent to his young Danish court anatomist. Nicolas Steno cut it open and stared at the teeth. He had seen those shapes before — in the stone of Malta, where they were sold as glossopetrae, "tongue stones", and swallowed as a cure for poison. Everyone knew such things simply grew inside rock, the way crystals do. Steno asked the harder question: if these are teeth, how did teeth get inside a hill?

Answering it took him three years and produced the four simple rules that turned the Earth's crust into a document a person could read: layers were laid down one atop another, so the lower is older; they were laid flat; they once ran on unbroken; and anything cutting across a layer came after it. It is the whole grammar of geological time, written by a man of twenty-eight who had trained as a doctor and would soon stop doing science altogether.

The work

Stensen's duct. Probing a sheep's head in Amsterdam, he traced the channel carrying saliva from the parotid gland to the mouth — still named for him in every anatomy atlas.

Where tears come from. He showed that tears are made by glands about the eye, not distilled from the brain, and mapped the workings of the glands more carefully than anyone before him.

The heart is only a muscle. In Elementorum myologiae specimen he dismantled the ancient belief that the heart held a vital flame or spirit. It was meat, arranged in fibres, doing mechanical work.

Tongue stones are teeth. Canis carchariae dissectum caput matched the shark's jaw to the fossils of Malta — and argued that solid objects can be buried inside solid rock.

The rules for reading rock. The Prodromus gave geology superposition, original horizontality, lateral continuity and cross-cutting relationships — the first lesson of the science, ever since.

Steno's Law. In the same book, he noted that quartz crystals of wildly different sizes keep the same angles between corresponding faces — the observation that opened crystallography.
A career he walked away from

  • He converted to Catholicism in 1667 and, after ordination, put research aside for good
  • As bishop of a poor northern mission he sold his ring and cross to feed others

The hills that taught him time

Tuscany

He was a Lutheran Dane, hired by the Medici, riding out among the marl and limestone hills between Florence, Volterra and the sea. Tuscany gave him seashells on mountaintops, fossil teeth in quarries, and rock lying in obvious layers — and he drew what he saw as a sequence of six states, from flooded sea-floor to the broken hill country in front of him. It is the earliest sustained attempt to picture a place as something that happened rather than something that simply is.
