She read the chromosomes of plants like a ledger of the past — and spent her last years defending a forest with them.

Edavalath Kakkat Janaki Ammal was born on the Malabar coast in 1897, into a community with no claim on caste privilege, at a time when almost no Indian woman went to college and none went abroad alone to take a doctorate in science. She did all three. In a Michigan laboratory she learned to squash plant cells onto glass, stain them carmine, and count the chromosomes inside — and she used that skill for the next fifty years to work out where the world's crops and garden flowers had come from, and how they had been made.

She never married, held no professorship for most of her career, and moved between three countries in search of a bench to work at. She died at 86 in a field laboratory outside Madras, still counting.

The work

1931
Chromosome studies in Nicandra physalodes — the Michigan doctoral work that made her a cytologist, at a moment when counting chromosomes was the sharpest tool biology had.
1934–39
Sugarcane at Coimbatore. She made crosses between sugarcane and its wild relatives, and worked out the chromosome makeup of Indian canes — evidence for where the crop was domesticated.
1945
The Chromosome Atlas of Cultivated Plants, with C. D. Darlington — a reference that let breeders anywhere see, at a glance, which plants could be crossed with which.
1946–51
Cytologist to the Royal Horticultural Society at Wisley, tracing the chromosome history of magnolias and garden flowers. A magnolia there still carries her name.
1952
The Botanical Survey of India, rebuilt. Invited back by Nehru, she reorganised the colonial-era Survey and pushed it toward the plants people actually used.
1970s
Silent Valley. In her seventies and eighties she surveyed the Kerala rainforest's plants for the campaign against a hydroelectric dam. The project was abandoned in 1983.
A career spent without a chair

Recognition

In her lifetime

  • Barred by neither talent nor training, but by caste and sex — historians record her isolation among colleagues at Coimbatore
  • Moved country three times to find a laboratory that would have her
  • Second name on the Atlas that carried her counts
  • Honoured late: an honorary LL.D. from Michigan in 1956, the Padma Shri only in 1977

Today

  • India's national award for plant taxonomy, instituted in 1999, bears her name
  • Silent Valley became a national park in November 1984 — nine months after she died
  • Her papers survive in the John Innes historical collections in England
  • A full scientific biography appeared in 2022, a century after she first sailed west
The town that made her

Thalassery, Malabar

A pepper-and-cardamom port on the Kerala coast, where the East India Company built a trading factory in 1683 and the sea air smelled of spice going out to Europe. Her family were Thiyyas — outside the upper castes, but educated and reform-minded; her father, a sub-judge, kept a garden and an amateur's interest in natural history. From that garden to a Michigan cytology bench was, in 1924, an almost unimaginable distance.
