In 1811, a twelve-year-old girl on the crumbling cliffs of Dorset dug out a seventeen-foot skeleton with a long-toothed, dolphin-like skull. It was not a crocodile. It was not anything alive. It was an ichthyosaur — proof, at a time when few could accept it, that whole worlds of creatures had lived and vanished before human memory began. The girl was Mary Anning, and she would spend her life pulling the deep past out of the sea cliffs, one impossible animal at a time.
She was poor, self-taught, and a woman — which in Georgian England meant the scientific societies that prized her finds would not let her join, and the men who bought her fossils published them under their own names. She sold what she found to survive. And still, quietly, she changed what humanity knew about its own planet.
