Tristan da Cunha is the most remote inhabited island on Earth: 220 islanders on a volcano in the South Atlantic, with no airstrip and the nearest neighbours a week's sail away.

to the nearest inhabited landThat is the gap between Tristan da Cunha and St Helena, its closest inhabited neighbour — about the distance from London to Moscow, with nothing but ocean in between.

01 · Scale
How far is “nearest”?
Measured outward from Tristan, the first inhabited land does not appear until 2,435 km — farther than Easter Island is from anyone.
Gradient = distance from Tristan, one hue light → dark. Hollow marker is a comparison, not on Tristan’s line.
02 · The island
One volcano, one village
The main island is a 98 km² cone rising to 2,062 m. Its people live on the only real flat ground: a strip of coastal plain on the north-west.
Queen Mary’s Peak is still an active volcano. On 10 October 1961 a new vent opened just beside the settlement of Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, and all 264 people on the island were evacuated — eventually to Britain.
Most families chose to go back. Around 200 islanders returned in 1963, rebuilt, and restarted the rock-lobster fishery that still funds the island.
There is no airstrip anywhere on the island. Every person, letter and spare part arrives by sea.
03 · Trend
A population that never passed 300
From 71 people in 1856 to a peak of 296 in 1987, the village has been shaped by the sea — once by a single lost boat.
Census figures 1856–2021. Red band: 1961–63, when the island was empty. *2026 = resident islanders only (Tristan Government, 21 Oct 2026).
04 · Comparison
220 people, seven names
The male founders who settled between 1816 and 1908 shared seven surnames. Today 215 of the 220 resident islanders still carry one of them.

05 · Stakes
A tiny island, an enormous ocean
In 2020 the islanders closed most of their waters to fishing and mining: a no-take zone roughly 7,000 times the size of their main island.
The Tristan da Cunha Marine Protection Zone covers about 687,000 km² — roughly three times the size of the United Kingdom — and is the largest fully protected marine area in the Atlantic.
Isolation is the island’s defining fact and its protection: the same distance that makes a doctor’s visit a week-long voyage keeps its seabird colonies and waters among the least disturbed in the ocean.
What to notice on the map
Read the rings
No other permanent settlement lies inside the 2,000 km band; St Helena only appears near the 2,435 km mark, and Cape Town past it.
The route in runs east, not north: the nearest neighbour is not the nearest port. Ships leave from Cape Town, ~6 days out.
Nearly the whole map is water. At this scale the main island’s 98 km² is a single dot — a no-take ocean zone around it is ~7,000× larger.
