Two steel rails, and the distance between them. Europe settled on 1,435 millimetres; the Russian Empire chose a little wider. The difference is 85 mm — less than the width of your palm — and it is one of the hardest borders on Earth to cross.

The gap between Europe's 1,435 mm standard gauge and the ex-Soviet 1,520 mm. No train can straddle it. Every one of the 19,392 China–Europe freight trains run in 2024 had to stop twice and be lifted off its own wheels — once entering the wide-gauge world, once leaving it.

Six hundred and seventy-eight thousand kilometres agree
Standard gauge is not standard because it is best. It is standard because George Stephenson used it on colliery wagonways, then on the Liverpool & Manchester in 1830, and everyone who bought his locomotives inherited it.

02 — The spectrum
Wider, narrower, never quite equal
Nine hundred and fifty millimetres of usable range, and the world's railways cluster into seven families. The most consequential gap in the whole spectrum is the smallest one on it.

03 — The bottleneck
Eleven thousand kilometres, two forced stops
A container leaving Chongqing for Duisburg rides standard gauge across China, wide gauge across Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus, and standard gauge again into Germany. It never changes trains at a border. It changes wheels.

04 — The country that changed its mind
India spent thirty-two years widening itself
India inherited four gauges from the Raj. In April 1992 it started converting all of them to 1,676 mm — the widest gauge in common use anywhere — under a programme called Unigauge. It very nearly finished.

Spain went the other way
Iberia's 1,668 mm gauge left Spain unable to run a train into France. Rather than convert 11,829 km of existing line, Spain built a second, parallel railway at 1,435 mm — and made it the fastest in Europe.

Every Spanish high-speed line since the Madrid–Seville AVE of 1992 has been laid to standard gauge, so trains can run through to France without a break. Variable-gauge axles let some trains switch between the two networks at speed.
06 — How gauges get settled
By law, by weekend, or by never
Britain legislated its gauge away. Australia lived with a change-of-trains at Albury for seventy-nine years. Eurasia has simply decided to live with the gap.

Why it matters
A war showed everyone what 85 mm costs
When the Black Sea ports closed in 2022, Ukraine tried to move its grain out by rail. It could not: Ukrainian wagons run on 1,520 mm and stop dead at the EU's 1,435 mm. Every tonne had to be craned or pumped into different wagons at the border. Grain carried on Polish railways quadrupled in a year to 4.1 million tonnes — and still the queues stretched for days. Gauge is not a technicality. It is the shape of what a country can sell, and to whom.
What to notice on the map
The dotted frontier traces the western and southern edge of the 1,520 mm bloc — Finland to the Baltic to the Black Sea, then all the way along the Chinese border. It is the longest continuous gauge boundary on Earth.
Every red region is wider than standard; every blue one is narrower. Grey is 1,435 mm. The grey is almost everywhere.
The frontier follows empires, not geography. It stops where Russian railway-building stopped, which is why Finland is red and Sweden is grey.
Spain and Portugal are a red island inside a grey continent — and Ireland is a red dot beside a grey Britain.
India's red block is the widest gauge in common use; Japan and southern Africa share the same narrow 1,067 mm for reasons a century and a hemisphere apart.
