Where the Milky Way Still Shows

Every human who lived before about 1880 could walk outside on a clear, moonless night and see our own galaxy overhead. Then we switched the lights on. The New World Atlas of Artificial Night Sky Brightness — built from satellite radiometry and tens of thousands of ground measurements — is the first global map of what we lost, and of the shrinking places where the Milky Way is still there to be seen.

More than one-third of humanity cannot see the Milky Way from where they live — including 60% of Europeans and nearly 80% of North Americans. Skyglow does not respect borders: it is a dome of scattered light that spills hundreds of kilometres past the last streetlamp.

01 — The threshold

The sky doesn't switch off. It fades.

Falchi's atlas is built on two hard lines. A sky counts as light-polluted once artificial brightness at the zenith exceeds 14 μcd/m² — roughly 8% above the natural background. The Milky Way disappears much later, at 688 μcd/m², about fifty times further along the scale. Between those two numbers sit most of the world's people.

On John Bortle's field scale, a Class 1 site reaches naked-eye magnitude 7.6–8.0; Class 9 is an inner city where only the brightest planets survive.

Because scattering is atmospheric, brightness falls off gradually with distance rather than stopping at a city limit — which is why the map's glow blooms are so much larger than the cities that make them.

02 — Land versus people

A quarter of the land. Four-fifths of the population.

Light pollution is concentrated exactly where people are, so the population figure runs far ahead of the land figure. That gap is the whole story of the map: there is still a lot of dark Earth — almost nobody lives on it.

And for the galaxy specifically: the Milky Way is invisible to more than 33% of humanity, 60% of Europeans and ~80% of North Americans. The atlas behind these numbers was computed from VIIRS Day/Night Band satellite radiance and calibrated against more than 30,000 ground-based sky-brightness measurements.

03 — Where the eye never adapts

Skies too bright for human night vision

Beyond the Milky Way threshold lies a further category: skies so bright that the human eye never fully switches to scotopic vision — you stay in permanent twilight adaptation, all night, every night. In Singapore that describes the entire population.

Look at where these countries sit on the map: small, hot, densely lit, and — in the Gulf — surrounded by desert that would otherwise be some of the darkest terrain on Earth. Geography did not doom them. Lighting design did.

04 — How far you'd have to drive

The atlas lets you ask a very concrete question: from here, how far to a sky that is essentially untouched? For Paris, the answer is a road trip.

Trace the dashed rings on the map and a pattern appears: the surviving dark places are deserts, boreal forest, high plateau, ocean-facing wilderness and the interiors of large, thinly populated states. They are dark because nobody is there — which is precisely why they are so easy to lose.

05 — The trend

The sky is brightening about 10% a year

Satellites said light pollution was growing slowly. Human eyes said otherwise. Between 2011 and 2022, more than 50,000 naked-eye star counts submitted to the Globe at Night citizen-science project showed night-sky brightness rising by 9.6% per year — a doubling in under eight years.

Satellites undercount: VIIRS is largely blind to the blue-rich light emitted by white LEDs, so the ground-truth human measurement runs roughly four times higher than the orbital one.

06 — Defending the dark

Two hundred and fifty places, deliberately kept dark

Light pollution is the rarest kind of environmental damage: it disappears the instant you switch the source off. There is no residue, no half-life. That makes protected dark-sky reserves unusually effective — and unusually cheap.
