The Inhabited Sliver
Draw a grid over the planet. Shade every cell where at least nine hundred people share a square mile. The shaded cells hold half of everyone alive — and they cover about one per cent of the land. This is the ecumene: the inhabited earth, and it is far smaller than the earth.

01 — The threshold
What counts as crowded
The famous “1%” map rests on one rule. Split the land into 28 million cells about three miles on a side, then shade any cell holding 8,000 people or more — a density of roughly 900 per square mile, about as crowded as Massachusetts. Half of humanity falls inside those shaded cells. The other half is spread across the remaining 99% of the land.

02 — The clusters
Where the sliver is
The dense ecumene is not scattered evenly. It follows alluvium, coastline and monsoon: the Indo-Gangetic Plain, the Chinese lowlands, Java, the Nile, the Rhine corridor, West Africa. Set each region’s share of people against its share of land and the mismatch is the whole story.

Seven hundred thousand square kilometres of river silt in northern India, Pakistan and Bangladesh carry close to a billion people — about one in eight humans on roughly one two-hundredth of the world’s land.
03 — The other 99%
The land without us
Empty is not the same as untouched. Mapping anthromes — land classified by how people actually use it — Ellis and colleagues found that by 2017 only about a quarter of ice-free land had no human occupation or land use at all. Most of the “empty” 99% is grazed, cropped or lightly lived in; genuinely wild land is the minority.

04 — The circle
You can draw a ring around half of us
In 2013 Ken Myers noticed that a circle about 4,000 km in radius, centred on the South China Sea, enclosed more than half the world’s population. Danny Quah checked it, then shrank it: a proper circle on the globe of just 3,300 km radius, centred on Mong Khet in Myanmar, still holds more people than the entire rest of the planet.

05 — Country scale
Every country has its own sliver
The pattern repeats at every zoom level. Egypt is the purest case: a green ribbon of valley and delta, a few kilometres wide for a thousand kilometres, holding almost everyone.

06 — The vertical move
The sliver is getting denser, not wider
Humanity is not spreading out to fill the empty land. It is stacking. In 1950 one in five people lived in a city; today it is 45% of a population more than three times larger, and the UN expects two-thirds of all population growth to 2050 to land in cities.
Settlement split uses the UN’s degree-of-urbanisation categories, introduced in the 2025 edition.
What to notice on the map
Read it as a map of water and silt
The terracotta clusters trace river plains and coasts almost exactly. The Ganges, the Yangtze, the Nile, the Rhine, the Niger — the ecumene is a hydrological map wearing demographic clothes.
The dense zone is bunched, not banded. A single ring 3,300 km across catches more than half of us; the Americas, Africa and Europe together supply the minority.
The gaps are legible as physics: too cold (Siberia, the Canadian north, Antarctica), too dry (Sahara, Empty Quarter, Outback, Great Basin), too high (Tibet), too wet and infertile (Amazon).
Nothing here is fixed. The ecumene has moved before — and the same alluvial plains that concentrate people also concentrate exposure to heat, flood and subsidence.
