For 72 years the heaviest pumpkin on the books weighed about 400 pounds. Then growers started breeding for size. This month a Rhode Island grower brought in a single fruit weighing more than 1.4 tonnes.
3,156lb
The new world record, grown by Ron Wallace and weighed on 10 Oct 2026 in Rhode Island: 1,431.5 kg, and the first pumpkin ever over 3,000 lb. That is about 8× the 1900 record. It broke a UK record that had stood for one week. SOURCE: GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS, 2026
01 · The scale
From 400 pounds to 3,156
Each tick is a record that broke a new threshold. The strip darkens as the fruit gets heavier.
Seventy years of nothing, then fifty years of everything
The world record for heaviest pumpkin, 1900–2026. Almost all the gain came after Howard Dill's Atlantic Giant seed spread in the late 1970s.
Step line: each riser is a new record. Gaps mean no new record appears in the table for those years.
03 · The quickening
Every 500 pounds came faster, until the last one
Years it took the record to climb each 500-lb step. The step to 2,000 lb took 6 years, the step to 2,500 took 4, and the step to 3,000 took 10.
Computed by Daily Dose from the record table: the year of the first record above each threshold.
04 · How it grows
A fruit that forgets to stop
Giant pumpkins lack the genes that halt fruit growth. Most of what they add is water.

05 · The ordinary pumpkin
1.47 billion pounds, and most of it is not for carving
US pumpkin production in 2025. Illinois grows more than the next four states combined, but most of its crop goes to canned purée and earns the lowest price.

A $13-billion night built on a $259-million crop
The pumpkin itself is a small farm crop. The holiday around it is not, and much of what gets carved is thrown away.

07 · What you can do
Why it matters
The giant is a record of what patient breeding can do. The ordinary pumpkin is food, and it is easy to waste.
Eat the carving
Carving pumpkins are edible. Roast the seeds and turn the flesh into soup or purée before you light the candle.
Compost the shell
Whatever you don't eat can go in the food-waste bin or the compost, not the landfill, where it would rot and release methane.
Grow one
Record holders started small. Wallace says 150 sq ft and a local Great Pumpkin Commonwealth club is enough to begin.
