Lightning is not scattered evenly over the Earth. It piles up in a narrow tropical band, over land, over warm water hemmed in by mountains — and in one Venezuelan lake it fires so relentlessly that sailors once steered by it.
Sixteen satellite-years of optical lightning data put the planet's average at 44 ± 5 flashes every second — roughly 1.4 billion flashes a year, and well below the old textbook figure of 100 per second.
Flash density collapses over open ocean and concentrates over tropical land. Six of the world's ten most lightning-struck places sit in the Congo Basin; the single most electric is a lake in Venezuela.
Maracaibo's engine is local: warm lake water, humid night winds funnelled by three mountain ranges, converging over the same water night after night. NASA's Earthdata team counts thunderstorms there on roughly 297 nights a year.

In 1940 lightning was the deadliest weather in America, killing more people than tornadoes and hurricanes combined. Eight decades later the storms are unchanged; the deaths are down more than 90%.
The fall continues: 17, 11, 19 and 14 deaths in 2020 through 2023. Lightning did not change — shelter did. Fewer people work outdoors, more buildings are wired and grounded, radar and phone alerts arrive minutes early, and "when thunder roars, go indoors" became a public-health campaign. Per person, an American today is roughly 50 times less likely to be killed by lightning than in 1940 (calculated from NWS deaths and US Census population).
Of 492 Americans killed by lightning from 2006 to 2024, nearly two-thirds were at leisure outdoors. Fishing killed three times as many people as golf — the danger is open water and a long walk back to shelter.
Most lightning never touches a person. It touches roofs, wiring, transformers and forests — and the bill arrives anyway.

The gap between 24,000 and 3,806 is the measurement problem in one line. Most lightning deaths happen to farmers and herders in countries that publish no lightning statistics at all.
Lightning needs a deep, wet, unstable atmosphere — exactly what a warmer surface makes more of. Two independent lines of evidence point the same way.
A CAPE-times-precipitation proxy reproduces 77% of the variance in observed cloud-to-ground flashes, and projects roughly 50% more strikes across the contiguous US this century. Romps et al., Science, 2014 (±5%; modelled projection).
Strokes above 65°N rose from about 18,000 to more than 150,000 per summer — from 0.2% to 0.6% of all global lightning — as the Arctic warmed. Holzworth et al., Geophysical Research Letters, 2021.
Lightning in the far north matters out of proportion to its count: it ignites tundra and boreal peat, which store enormous amounts of carbon and burn for months.
