Civilisation runs on a temperature it has to maintain. Roughly 5.4 billion refrigeration systems — domestic fridges, supermarket cases, reefer trucks, vaccine coolers, ultra-cold freezers — hold food and medicine inside narrow thermal windows, every hour of every day. It is the largest machine humanity has ever built, and the one we notice least. Where it stops, food rots and vaccines die.

Refrigeration and air conditioning together consume about a fifth of the world's electricity and account for roughly 7.5% of global CO₂ emissions. The sector runs some 5.4 billion systems, employs about 12 million people, and turns over more than USD 300 billion a year in equipment alone.

01 · The ladder of cold
Not one temperature. A staircase of them.
"Cold chain" is shorthand for a set of legally and biologically defined windows. Bananas spoil if chilled too far; a vaccine dies if it freezes once; an mRNA dose needs a freezer colder than the Antarctic record. Each step down the ladder costs more energy and tolerates less failure.

No other appliance class comes close. The refrigeration fleet is bigger than the global car fleet, and unlike cars it never switches off.

03 · What melts
Twelve percent of the harvest never gets cold enough.
UNEP and the FAO put a number on the missing cold: in 2017, 526 million tonnes of food — about an eighth of everything grown — was lost specifically because there was no refrigeration to carry it from field to plate.

The food lost to missing refrigeration each year could feed about one billion people.
Those losses carry an emissions bill of their own: roughly 1 gigatonne of CO₂-equivalent, about 2% of all global greenhouse gas emissions — grown, fertilised, irrigated, transported, then thrown away. 04 · The cold is growing
World cold storage, +30% in six years.
The Global Cold Chain Alliance surveys refrigerated warehouse capacity across ~50 countries. Between 2014 and 2020 it grew by roughly 167 million cubic metres — the equivalent of adding another India-sized cold store to the planet.

The demand curve behind it is steeper still. The IEA counts roughly 1.6 billion air conditioners in buildings today, drawing about 10% of world electricity — a stock it projects will reach 5.6 billion units by 2050. IEA, The Future of Cooling, 2018
05 · Where the cold is
Three countries hold six cubic metres in every ten.
Of 719 million cubic metres of refrigerated warehouse worldwide, the United States, India and China account for 437 million between them. The other 48 surveyed countries share what is left.

Capacity is not the same as access. Sustainable Energy for All estimates that one in seven people worldwide is at high risk from lack of access to cooling, and forecasts 1.05 billion people still at high risk in 2030. 06 · The two-to-eight window
The failure mode isn't heat. It's freezing.
About 70% of vaccines must stay between +2 and +8 °C. Public intuition says the danger is a warm truck; the literature says otherwise. A vaccine that gets too cold, even once, is silently and permanently dead — and no one downstream can see it.

Why it matters
Cold is a climate problem and a climate solution at once.
Every new fridge cuts food waste and adds electricity demand and refrigerant leakage. The Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol — in force since January 2019 — commits countries to cutting projected HFC refrigerant production and use by more than 80% over thirty years, which UNEP estimates could avoid up to 0.4 °C of warming by 2100. That makes the design of the cold chain, not just its existence, one of the highest-leverage climate decisions of the century.
At homeSet the fridge to +4 °C and the freezer to −18 °C — colder is wasted power, warmer is spoiled food. Keep coils dust-free and the door seal intact.
At disposalNever scrap a fridge or AC in general waste. Old refrigerant vented from one unit can equal tonnes of CO₂; certified recovery is the whole point of Kigali.
At scaleThe cheapest cold chain is a shorter one. Solar direct-drive coolers and shared village cold rooms are what turn a harvest into income instead of compost.
