The Pile-Up at Zero
There is no island where the equator crosses the prime meridian — just 4,940 metres of Atlantic. And yet millions of records insist they belong there. When a computer fails to find a place, it very often defaults to 0, 0. Cartographers named the resulting phantom Null Island, and it has quietly become one of the most crowded coordinates on Earth.

01 · The place
Six hundred kilometres from anywhere
Null Island sits in the Gulf of Guinea, in international water. The closest solid ground is a small islet off Ghana's Achowa Point, 570 km north. Below the marker, the seabed lies roughly 4,940 m down. Everything that lands here has been sent by an error.

02 · The pile-up
Every null has to go somewhere
A geocoder that cannot resolve an address does not usually stop — it returns something. Historically that something has been zero. The same failure mode built other phantom capitals: MaxMind's IP database, unable to place an address more precisely than "United States", pointed at the country's geographic centre — and landed on one rented farmhouse in Potwin, Kansas.

03 · The decimal
Zero is not the same as unknown
Latitude and longitude carry no way to say "I don't know". A blank field becomes a number; a number becomes a dot; a dot becomes a fact. The irony is that 0.000000 is stated to the millimetre — the most precise-looking coordinate a system can emit, about a place nobody has ever stood.

Ground distance per decimal place of latitude at the equator, where 1° ≈ 111.32 km (WGS84). Longitude precision shrinks toward the poles; at 0°, 0° the two are identical — one more reason the null point looks deceptively exact.
04 · The curve
A century of specimens, filed at zero
Sort every zero-coordinate record in GBIF by the year the organism was actually collected and a shape appears: the long paper era of museum ledgers, digitised decades later with the location field left empty. The curve peaks in 1997 and then falls off a cliff — modern collection software increasingly refuses to write a null as a place.

05 · The witness
There was, for a while, something there
Null Island is not entirely empty. For more than two decades a single instrument floated at the crossing point: PIRATA weather buoy Station 13010, nicknamed Soul — 3.8 m of conical steel in a 17-buoy array run jointly by the United States, France and Brazil. It was the only physical object at the world's busiest fictional address. It was decommissioned in March 2021.

Why it matters
A joke that keeps costing real money
Null Island is funny until it isn't. A missing coordinate becomes a false one, and false coordinates propagate: a species range map that includes open ocean, a delivery routed to nowhere, a threat map that appears to show attacks originating from the middle of the Atlantic, a family in Kansas answering the door to police because 600 million IP addresses were rounded to their farm. The failure is never the ocean — it's a system that could not say unknown, so it said zero.
If you build with mapsReject 0,0 on write, not on read. Store an explicit null and a confidence field; never let a default coordinate escape into a database.
If you analyse dataScreen for the phantom points first — 0,0, country centroids, capital-city coordinates. Tools like CoordinateCleaner flag them in one pass.
If you use a mapTreat a dot in an improbable place as a question, not a fact. Six decimal places is a claim about precision, not about truth.
