Forty-Four a Second
Somewhere on Earth, right now, a channel of air a few centimetres wide is being heated to five times the temperature of the Sun's surface. It happens about forty-four times every second, and it has been happening for as long as there has been an atmosphere. What's changing is where.

The global average measured by NASA's Optical Transient Detector — 44 ± 5 per second, or roughly 1.4 billion flashes a year. The rate breathes with the seasons: 35 per second in February, 60 in August, when the northern landmasses are hot.

Lightning is made over hot land, not warm ocean. So the global flash rate follows the northern hemisphere's summer — the months when Africa, Asia and North America are all baking at once.

02 — The Channel
Five suns, for thirty microseconds
A return stroke dumps its charge down a path of ionised air. The channel is narrower than your wrist, and for an instant it is the hottest thing for a thousand kilometres in any direction.

03 — The Map
Earth's lightning is absurdly unequal
NASA's Lightning Imaging Sensor watched the tropics for fifteen years and resolved the planet down to single hotspots. The quietest places see less than one flash per square kilometre per decade. One patch of water in Venezuela sees 232 a year.

04 — A Warmer Sky
Lightning is migrating north
Thunderstorms need buoyant, moist air. Warm the lower atmosphere and you get more of both — which is why the sharpest signal is in the place warming fastest. Strokes above 65°N rose almost tenfold in a decade.

05 — The Human Ledger
The one curve going the right way
In 1943, lightning killed 432 people in the United States. In 2025 it killed 21. Nothing about the atmosphere changed — we did. Fewer farmhands in open fields, better forecasts, phones, and a public that finally goes inside.

The often-quoted global toll of ~24,000 deaths a year is a modelled estimate (Holle & López, 2003: 6 deaths per million × 4 billion exposed people), not a measurement. Documented national tallies total roughly 4,000 a year, and most countries publish nothing at all.

What a billion flashes cost
Lightning's damage is mostly quiet: fried circuit boards, surged HVAC systems, a roof fire that started three hours after the storm passed. And in the American West, it is the ignition source that burns the most ground.

Lightning starts one fire in six — and burns more than half the acreage. Its fires ignite in remote, unroaded terrain, far from anyone who could stop them early, and often several at once across a single dry storm.

Why it matters
When thunder roars, go indoors
If you can hear thunder, you are in range. Lightning routinely strikes 10–15 km from the parent storm — well ahead of the rain.
Wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before going back out. Most fatal strikes in the US happen at the edges of a storm, not its centre.
A substantial building or a hard-topped vehicle is safe. Almost nothing else is. Not a picnic shelter, not a dugout, not a tree — a tree is the second-worst place to stand and the worst place to shelter.
Unplug what you value. Nearly half of insured lightning damage arrives as a ground surge through the wiring, not a direct hit.
The risk is not evenly shared. Four fifths of US victims are male, and most are caught outdoors at leisure — fishing, at the beach, on a field. The countries with the highest death rates are the ones with the fewest lightning-safe buildings.
