Water is the only thing humanity consumes more of. Every year we dig, dredge and blast about fifty billion tonnes of sand and gravel out of rivers, beaches and quarries — and pour most of it into the concrete that the modern world is made from. There is a lot of sand on Earth. Almost none of it is the right kind.

01 / The Grain
A sliver of a spectrum
Geologists sort sediment by diameter on the Udden–Wentworth scale — a logarithmic ladder from clay to boulders. "Sand" is one narrow rung on it: grains between 0.0625 and 2 millimetres. Below that, particles are too fine to carry load. Above it, you have gravel. And within the sand band, only angular, well-graded grains interlock properly with cement paste.
Scale is logarithmic. Boundaries per the Udden–Wentworth grade scale (Wentworth, 1922). Dune-sand grading from reporting on desert aggregate; grain shape, not just size, is the disqualifier — wind-polished spheres slide past one another instead of interlocking.

Sand and gravel are the raw feedstock; concrete is what we turn them into. Roughly 30 billion tonnes of concrete gets poured every year, bound together by about 4 billion tonnes of cement. Set against every other material humanity extracts, nothing solid comes close.

03 / The Concrete Century
The doubling, then the plateau
World cement output doubled in a single decade — 2.0 billion tonnes in 2003, 4.0 billion by 2013 — almost entirely on the back of Chinese construction. Since then it has flattened, and in 2025 it slipped. The plateau is not a solution; it is a very high shelf.

04 / Where It Comes From
Rivers pay the bill
The best construction sand is river sand — angular, washed, well-graded. So dredgers go where the rivers are. In the Mekong Delta, extraction reported at nearly 18 million cubic metres a year outpaces what the river can deliver, and the land itself is going down faster than the sea is coming up.

What it costs to be built on sand
Take sand out of a river and the coastline downstream starves. Roughly a third of the world's ice-free shoreline is sandy, and a quarter of that is already retreating faster than half a metre a year — before you add sea-level rise. Then there is the carbon: cement-making alone emitted about 1.47 billion tonnes of CO₂ in 2024.

06 / Why It Matters
Sand is a renewable resource on a geological clock, not a human one
Rivers make new sand by grinding mountains down. That process runs on millennia. We are drawing on the account roughly 6% faster every year. UNEP's recommendations are unglamorous and specific:
Stop landfilling mineral waste. Construction and demolition rubble is already the right rock, already crushed — it just needs to be sorted and reused rather than buried.
Crush rock instead of dredging rivers. Manufactured aggregate from quarried stone gives angular grains by design, without starving a delta.
Use "ore-sand" from mine tailings. Mining already produces vast volumes of processed sand-sized material that is currently treated as waste.
Build with less. Cement is the carbon; aggregate is the volume. Better structural design, longer building lifetimes and lower-clinker blends cut both at once.
Govern it like a resource. Most sand extraction is informal, unmeasured or illegal. You cannot manage a flow of 50 gigatonnes that nobody is counting.
