Four-fifths of the atmosphere is nitrogen, and almost none of it is usable by living things. In 1909 Fritz Haber pulled a few millilitres of ammonia out of ordinary air; Carl Bosch scaled the reaction to industry. German chemists called the result Brot aus Luft — bread from air. It now underwrites roughly half the food on Earth, and it is the single largest human perturbation of a planetary nutrient cycle.
About four billion people are alive on food grown with fertilizer nitrogen fixed in a steel reactor. Roughly half the nitrogen atoms in the protein of a living human body came from that reaction rather than from soil bacteria or lightning. Erisman et al., Nature Geoscience, 2008.
Before 1910, the nitrogen available to farming came only from manure, legumes, lightning and mined Chilean nitrate. The share of humanity fed by industrially fixed nitrogen has climbed with every decade since.

World agriculture applied 11.5 million tonnes of fertilizer nitrogen in 1961. In 2023 it applied 111.6 million tonnes — a tenfold rise on a planet whose population grew just over 2.6×.

Nitrogen recovery efficiency — the share of applied nitrogen that ends up in the harvested crop — averages about 48% worldwide. The remainder volatilises, runs off, or leaches into groundwater.

Splitting the triple bond in N₂ takes roughly 450 °C and 200 atmospheres. Almost all of the hydrogen fed into the reaction still comes from fossil methane, which makes ammonia one of the heaviest industrial emitters on Earth.

The world does not share this fertilizer evenly. A hectare of Egyptian cropland receives more than 300 kg of nitrogen a year; a hectare in Uganda receives about one. Both ends of the strip are a problem — one of surplus, one of depletion.

Of the nine planetary boundaries, the one for biogeochemical flows is among the most exceeded — and nitrogen is why. The costs land in hospitals and estuaries rather than on the fertilizer invoice.
