Where the
Earth Shakes

A 40,000-kilometre horseshoe of trenches and volcanic arcs traces the rim of the Pacific. Roughly nine in ten of the planet's earthquakes happen inside it — and so does most of what we call catastrophe.

90%
of the world's earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire — the circum-Pacific belt. It also produces about 81% of the world's largest earthquakes. The next-busiest zone, the Alpide belt from Java to the Mediterranean, accounts for just 5–6%.

01 — The Belt

A horseshoe, not a ring

It is a chain of subduction zones where oceanic crust dives beneath continents and island arcs. Follow it from New Zealand up through Indonesia, Japan and Kamchatka, across the Aleutians, then down the Americas to southern Chile.

02 — The Scale

Every step is 32 times the energy

Magnitude is logarithmic. A step of one whole number releases about 32 times more seismic energy; two steps, about 1,000 times. That is why the gap between a quake you feel and a quake that erases a coastline looks so small on paper.

03 — The Record

Nine of the ten biggest

Of the ten largest earthquakes ever recorded by instruments, nine ruptured on the Ring of Fire. The only outsider — Assam–Tibet, 1950 — sits on the Alpide belt, where India is grinding into Asia.

04 — The Century

They arrive in clusters, then stop

Plotting those ten events as they accumulated across 120 years shows something uncomfortable: six landed between 1950 and 1965, then the planet went quiet for 39 years. Quiet is not the same as safe.

05 — The Engine

Fingernails, then eight seconds

Subduction runs at the speed a fingernail grows. Strain accumulates for centuries and then releases in minutes — in 2011 the seafloor off Japan lurched more than 50 metres, the largest fault slip ever measured.

06 — The Stakes

What the ring costs

The belt is not empty coastline. Some of the densest, richest, most industrialised places on Earth sit directly on top of it — Tokyo, Manila, Jakarta, Santiago, Los Angeles, Seattle, Lima.

Why it matters

You cannot predict a quake. You can survive one.

No one can forecast the day

Seismologists can give long-run probabilities for a fault — Cascadia's 10–15% in 50 years — but no method reliably predicts the date, place and size of an individual earthquake. Anyone claiming otherwise is selling something.

Minutes are the whole game

Japan's system detected the 2011 rupture and warned Tokyo before the shaking arrived. Similar systems now run in Mexico, Taiwan and the US West Coast (ShakeAlert). If you live on the rim, turn on the alerts your phone already has.

If the ground shakes near a coast, go up

A local tsunami can arrive in 10–20 minutes — far faster than any official warning. The shaking is the warning. Move inland or uphill and stay there.

Buildings kill, not earthquakes

The magnitude that levels one city leaves another standing. Chile's M8.8 in 2010 killed a fraction of what smaller quakes have killed elsewhere, largely because of enforced building codes. Retrofitting is the single highest-leverage thing a rim city can do.
