Eight Billion, Unevenly

There are 8.2 billion of us, and we are not spread out. We are piled into a handful of river valleys, coastal plains and monsoon deltas — and most of the planet's land surface holds almost nobody at all. Here is the map of where humanity actually sits.

Half of humanity fits in one circle

Draw a 4,000-kilometre circle centred on Yunnan and it swallows China, India, Japan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Vietnam, the Philippines and Korea. Everyone else — all of Africa, Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Oceania — lives outside it.

The circle idea began as a Reddit map by Ken Myers in 2013; Danny Quah shrank it to 3,300 km in 2015, and Alasdair Rae re-solved it in 2022 across ~1,500 candidate circles.

From two people per square kilometre to twenty thousand

National population density spans four orders of magnitude. On a logarithmic strip, the whole inhabited world fits between Mongolia's empty steppe and the stacked apartment towers of Macau — a 10,000-fold difference.

Almost everyone lives in a narrow northern belt

Humanity is not just clustered east–west. It is squeezed into a temperate and sub-tropical band north of the equator. Half of everyone alive lives north of about 27°N — the latitude of Delhi, Cairo and the Florida Keys.

Cities won; the countryside emptied

The UN's 2025 revision splits the world three ways — cities, towns and rural areas. In 1950 towns and countryside each held 40% of humanity and cities just 20%. In seventy-five years the rural share collapsed by more than half.

The next three billion people will not arrive where the last three did. Growth has moved to sub-Saharan Africa and to cities — and the ground we build on is expanding faster than we are.

Why it matters

A crowded map is a fragile one

Risk is concentratedThe same clustering that makes cities productive stacks people onto floodplains, deltas and fault lines. Four in ten of us live within 100 km of a rising sea. A single bad monsoon or a single earthquake in the wrong valley reaches more people than ever before.

Emptiness is a resourceNinety percent of the land holds five percent of the people. That space is where food, water, carbon and biodiversity come from. How much of it we convert to built surface in the next twenty-five years is a live choice, not a forecast.

Read a map before a number"Eight billion" is an abstraction. "Half of us inside one circle" is a fact you can point at. When you next see a global average — of income, emissions, water use — ask which part of the map it actually describes.
