A Brief History of Everyone
Our numbers were nearly flat for fifty thousand years, went vertical inside a single lifetime,
and are now — quietly, almost unnoticed — beginning to bend back. This is the shape of that curve, and the
real figures behind it.

That is the Population Reference Bureau's 2022 estimate of every Homo sapiens
birth in history. Roughly 7% of them are alive right now — which means about
one in every fifteen people who have ever drawn breath is reading, working, or sleeping today.
01 · The long flat line
For 98% of the story, there were almost none of us
Three strips, each a zoom into the tail of the one above it. Colour encodes world population on a
linear scale — pale is empty, dark is eight billion. The point is how late the darkness arrives.

02 · The narrowest moment
Everyone alive descends from about 1,280 people
A 2023 genomic study reconstructed a crash in our ancestors' breeding population that lasted
roughly 117,000 years. Every dot below is one of them.

This is a modelled effective population size, not a headcount — and the estimate remains debated.
03 · The centuries that went nowhere
450 years, 50 million people
Between 1200 and 1650 the world added barely a tenth of its number. Plague, famine and war kept
taking back what agriculture gave. Growth was not slow — it was cancelled, repeatedly.
Benchmarks: Population Reference Bureau (2022). Ole Benedictow's revised reading of the parish and
manorial evidence puts Black Death mortality at roughly 60% of Europe — some 50 million of 80 million people —
between 1346 and 1353; other historians read the same record as 30–50%.
04 · The vertical century
The first billion took forever. The eighth took eleven years.
Each bar is the time the world needed to add its next billion people. The acceleration ends around
1990; everything after that is the brake coming on.

05 · The bend
Growth peaked in 1963 — and nobody noticed for decades
Annual world population growth rate, every year from 1950. It topped out at 2.28% in 1963, has
more than halved since, and on the UN's central projection crosses zero in the mid-2080s.

06 · What the peak looks like
Somewhere in the 2080s, the line stops climbing
Not from catastrophe — from choice. More than half the world's countries are already below the
replacement rate of 2.1 births per woman, and a quarter of humanity lives somewhere that has already peaked.

Why it matters
The story is no longer "how many" but "how old"
The old fear is expiring
The 1960s panic about a population explosion was aimed at a growth rate that had already peaked in
1963. Policy chased a curve that was, by then, on its way down. It's a useful reminder of how long it takes
for demographic reality to reach public argument.
Ageing is the live problem
By the late 2050s the UN expects more than half of all deaths worldwide to occur at age 80 or older.
The pressing questions become pensions, care work and shrinking workforces — not standing room.
Where growth still lives
126 countries — including India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Indonesia and the United States — are still projected to
grow through 2054. The world is peaking, but not everywhere at once, and that unevenness is what the
next fifty years of migration and economics will be about.
