A 113-gram seabird flies farther in one year than most cars are driven in a decade. Miniature tags have finally measured the planet's great commutes — and they are longer, and more fragile, than anyone guessed.
The longest migration ever recorded for any animal: one Arctic tern, tagged on the Farne Islands, England, flew to the Weddell Sea off Antarctica and back in a single year. Newcastle University, 2016.
Every bar below comes from an animal that carried a tag. Geolocators shrank below 2 grams in the 2000s, and the records immediately doubled — the Arctic tern's journey turned out to be about twice as long as textbooks had claimed.

Long migrations are rarely straight lines. Terns zig-zag to ride prevailing winds; shearwaters trace a figure-eight across the Pacific; godwits gamble everything on one following gale. The map is schematic — the routes are real.

The gap between the best land migration and the best air migration is not a matter of degree. A caribou herd walks 1,350 km a year. An Arctic tern covers that distance roughly every five days.
Logarithmic scale — each step right is ten times farther. Monarch and painted lady distances are multi-generational: no single butterfly completes the loop.
In October 2022 a five-month-old bar-tailed godwit, known only by the number on its satellite tag, left southwest Alaska and did not land again until it reached Ansons Bay, Tasmania. It ate nothing, drank nothing and never stopped flapping.

Arctic terns regularly live past thirty. Multiply an average year's flying by an average life and the arithmetic gets absurd.
The Greenland tracking study measured an average round trip of 70,900 km per year. Arctic terns ringed in the wild have been recorded at more than 30 years old. Thirty-plus years at that rate exceeds 2.4 million kilometres — a figure that is a calculation, not a measurement: no single bird has been tracked for its whole life.
A round trip to the Moon is about 768,800 km. The tern makes that journey three times over, in 4-ounce increments, without a map.

Migration is a chain of places. Break one link — a drained wetland, a dammed river, a lit-up coastline — and the whole journey fails. The UN's first global stocktake of migratory species, in 2024, found the chain fraying fast. Its 2026 interim update found it worse.

A tern's 96,000 km is not a stunt. It is an economy: terns follow food, food follows productivity, productivity follows ocean chemistry. Migratory animals stitch together ecosystems that never touch — Arctic insects feed on Antarctic krill budgets, in effect. When a route collapses, two continents lose at once.
